The Start (George/Closed)

He was so close. I wanted to someone to comfort me like my mum had done when she had been around. I hadn't been comforted in so long, but then I'd learnt how to comfort myself. But now, being here, in a new place, everything was new and I didn't know any more.

I looked down to him and then shook my head before I turned away again. I held my arm tighter and said, "There's nothing you can do. Unless you can turn back time, nothing can be done." I tucked my hair behind my right ear and said, "Go along to bed. I'll be going soon. I just need to be tired that's all. Can't get my first friend in trouble for being tired can I?" I tried to laugh at the end of that but it turned out to be not a lot.

I smiled at her, i hoped it was a comfort. Beth's laugh was strained but it was still there which is good. I thought for a moment, i was tired but i still didn't want to leave her here when she was in this state.

"Beth, i'm not really tired either," i lied, "we could just sit up until you get tired, i mean were not really doing anything wrong by staying in the common room are we?" i said with a cheeky grin. I stood up and sat back down in my chair, i felt a little awkward just hovering on the floor without any real purpose. I sat back in the chair and looked at Beth. I tried to catch her eye because i could now tell that her eyes were the key to all of Beth's emotions.

I shrugged. If he wanted to stay then he could. I mean, what could be the harm in having a little company. "You know George. You're really stubborn." I smiled as I said it, but still without looking at him. It was the most normal and voluntary thing that had come out of my mouth in ages.

I had no idea how long we were sitting there, but we didn't talk much. I didn't know what George was doing because I just kept staring at the fire trying to forget. Eventually I looked up at him to see him nodding off.

I stood up and smiled. "I think it's bedtime don't you." I was quite tired myself. Not as tired as I wanted to be, but tired enough. "Come on..." I started walking towards the dorms, and just as I was about to open the door to the girls dorm I turned back and said, "Thank you." Then I slipped inside.

I smiled at the closed door of the girls dorm. I was in a good mood now but very tired. I slowly eased open the door to my dorm and slipped inside. I was quick to get to bed. I was excited for the next day to come.

I awoke with a start, the other boys in my dorm were mostly up and making a racket. I looked at the clock on the wall and realised i'd over slept, no surprise seeing that i was up for half the night. I got ready quickly and was in the common room in no time.

It was filled with 1st years, all just as confused as me as to where to go now. I looked around for Beth, i could see most of the girls in our year standing to one side. I turned to one of the boys near me whom i'd gotten to know on the train. "hey, i'll be back in a second," i said. Plucking up the courage to walk over to the group of girls. I smiled when i saw Beth, "morning," i said with a smile.

I'd slept fairly well that night which had been surprising and I still managed to get up with the rest of the girls and get ready on time.

I was standing in the common room by the fire with another group of girls. I'd come out of the dorm with them and when I went to stand by the fire they came and stood by me. I didn't know why but they smiled at me so I took it as a good sign.

I was listening to them chatting away when George came over to the group. Every single girl looked his way and smiled, but he was looking at me. I had my arms crossed over my stomach and I wasn't smiling. I didn't know if I wanted to, but then the girls turned their attention on me, so I decided to say something, "Morning." And only then did a lopsided smile spread across my face.

Everyone turned their attention to me and i just smiled back. This was awkward and i looked round quickly. "umm..sleep well?" i asked Beth, I was failing miserably. I shuffled my feet. I glnaced around the room and noticed other students leaving, i guess it was time for breakfast.

I took a step back from the group of girls but kept my eyes on Beth, "shall we go to breakfast?" i asked, just as awkwardly. Why was i being like this around my friend? it seemed to strange. i tried t ignore it as i locked eyes with Beth before turning away to walk to breakfast. i waited for her to join me before carrying on out of the common room and to the great hall. Inside i was overly excited, it was my first day of lessons.

I smiled and nodded. "Yeah I did actually." Then he walked away and back to who I thought were his friends, but as they left I could tell he was waiting.

Some of the girls in the group I was standing with just looked at me, some giggled and then one of them pushed me forwards in an urgent sort of way. In other words she was telling me to go after him. I smiled at them before walking up to catch George up.

As I walked past him I turned around to face him, took a quick glance at the group behind us and then back to him. "I thought you said you were getting breakfast? Or are you choosing to be lazy?" I didn't want him to answer so instead I properly smiled and giggled then said, "Come on!"
