Breakfast at Gryffindor table [open]

George Watson~~ Gryffindor

I entered the Great Hall, It still mesmerised me every time. It was so large and grand and the ceiling was just amazing. This morning it was blue with several clouds floating by, promising a nice day. I smiled to myself as i walked down the aisles between the tables.

I sat down at our table and Beth joined me. I looked around at the other students at the table, they were all from different years but the majority were 1st years. i smiled at the faces which looked back at me. I turned my attention to Beth just as the food appeared. It still shocked me.

As people started to eat, i also filled up my plate and began to eat as well. I turned to Beth and smiled, i realised that she was my first proper friend and i was glad for it. "so what do you think to all this? It's pretty cool isn't it?" i grinned.

I looked around me in the Great Hall. There were so many people there already from each house, but still there was no food on the table. As soon as George and me sat down though the food appeared and even though I'd had breakfast, lunch and dinner in the hall it still took me by surprise.

I looked up and down at the different things that were on offer. I don't think I'd ever seen so much in my life. I started piling what I wanted on to my plate and my mouth started watering at the sight and smell of it. George's plate was full to toppling over which made me smile.

I sat back and relaxed as I began to tuck in. In answer to his question I nodded my head. "Yeah it really is. I've never seen anything like this place before. The food still takes me by surprise." I smiled his way and said, "You got enough to eat there?"

I looked up from my food and smiled at Beth. I wanted to laugh but i had a mouthful of toast. I gulped it down quickly, "yeah, i think so.." i said looking down at my over flowing plate which at that very moment decided to throw off several rashes of bacon onto the table. I laughed at the abundance of food whilst scooping up the bacon and shoving it back onto the plate. "I'm not even that hungry!" I added.

I realised that i must look like a pig and i could tell i wasn't the only one thinking this as a few of my classmates laughed with me as i continued to battle with my food. I looked over at Beth, her plate seemed bare compared to my mountains. "It just looks so good and i never get a chance to have this much food at home!" i told her with a grin, my mum had always been one to control how much we ate so that we didn't get fat or whatever. I was just glad she couldn't see me now. The thought made me smile.

I giggled at him and then looked at the other people watching him. Some of them were first years and some were higher up in the school, but not one of them seemed to mind. But then again, most of the first years had plates piled with food, with George the only one having trouble keeping his on the plate. Then there was the few of us that restricted ourselves. I was amongst those.

"Well if you keep eating like that you're going to end up the size of the school." I knew it was an exaggeration but it made him smile and most of the kids at the table too. I smiled along with what I'd said. "Or you'll just get bored of eating and miss out on all the good stuff." I smiled and turned my attention back to my plate of food as I ate some bacon. It was so delicious!

"Besides I've never had seen this much food in my entire life. But then again. You're a boy." I looked at him sideways on and just grinned. The first time I had grinned and it felt good. I was finally relaxing and it was all because I'd found a friend.

I laughed, I was such a greedy pig and yet it didn't seem to matter although i did sort of lose my overly large appetite. I looked up at the others around me and then at my food. I carried on eating but with less vigor than before, I wasn't sure why though.

The hall was filled with conversation buzzing around us, but you couldn't catch enough of it to understand what each individual group were on about. The rest of the students around me had gone back to their food. With a smile and looked up at Beth who was daintily picking at her bacon. "and why me being a boy make any difference?" i asked teasingly, "I've seen some girls who eat like an over weight horse!" i said, exaggerating. But it made Beth smile which was more important. I was glad that she was my friend.

I smiled. I hadn't really known what I had meant by what I said other than it was quite funny. I shrugged my shoulders, "Maybe I just meant that boys have bigger appetites than girls. But yeah girls can eat a lot too. Believe it or not I do at times too." I smiled his way and then went back to my food.

I still wasn't quite used to the size of this place. Compared to my primary school the hall was as big as the whole school put together. It was daunting to think that I would have to walk the corridors of this school later today to attend my first lessons. I just didn't want to get lost.

I turned back to George who was struggling to eat, so I said, "You're going to have to learn to pace yourself."

I smiled at Beth, realising that i must look like an idiot. I looked down at my plate, i'd eaten quite a bit but there was still loads there. I sighed, why had i taken so much? I pushed my plate away from me and relaxed a little. I knew for future reference to take a lot less food.

It'd be the end of breakfast soon and we'd have lessons. I was so excited, i couldn't wait. It would finally be my chance to actually use magic, even if i couldn't do so out of school. It might even make my parents use it more at home. From my conversations with others i realised that i might as well be a muggle with the amount of magic that my parents used at home. I shrugged off the thought and turned back to those sitting around me. I smiled at Beth, "so, how you feeling about lessons?" i asked, trying to keep my voice blank so i didn't show my overwhelming amount of excitement.

I smiled as he pushed his plate aside. He'd obviously had enough and what a waste it was. Everything here was so delicious I didn't understand how he could waste it. But then again he'd probably put more on his plate of the same thing. He was strange.

I had finished everything on my plate and turned so I could comfortably talking to him. Even though I could tell he was trying to hide his excitement he wasn't doing a very good job. He reminded me of James when he used to get excited over the littlest things. But I wasn't to compare George with James. They were nothing alike.

"I guess I'm excited. Just slightly scared about the size of the school and getting lost. How about you? Other than being extremely excited?"

I smiled, i was obviously terrible at hiding my emotions or Beth was brilliant and picking them up. Either way i needed to be a lot more careful in the future. I thought for a moment, I hadn't really contemplated the size of Hogwarts but on thought i realised that actually i was really likely to get lost, especially with my directional skills.

"well, you got me, I am so excited to finally be able to use magic..." she looked at me as if i was weird, i laughed. "I mean..my parents use magic but rarely because of the muggles we get in the pub..it'd be a bit obvious..so they like never use it which is really frustrating," I flashed Beth a grin, "so i'm excited to get the chance..but i hadn't really thought about the school size...i am so gonna get lost though, i can tell!" I grinned again.

I laughed at him. He was too obvious it was funny and I couldn't help but laugh.

"I guess it is exciting to be able to use magic. I've seen it used quite a lot around my house with my parents and all." I looked away at that point, "But ever since the accident, my dad used his magic to punish me..." I trailed off at the disturbing memories that I had of my home life. It wasn't a happy life, it was a sad one. But now I was here things were looking up.

I turned back to George and smiled slightly, "So what do you have first?" I knew what I had first, but I wanted to know if he had the same thing or a lesson that would take us in roughly the right direction. I just really didn't want to get lost.

I noticed Beth's expression change when she spoke about home, i didn't quite know what she meant about her dad punishing her with magic but i could tell it upset her. I wasn't really thinking as instinctively i reached out my hand and held hers. I smiled softly.

I withdrew my hand and thought for a moment, i was trying to recall my subject. I knew it was somewhere in my brain, "I think i have...transfiguration?" i said warily. But as i said it, i was quite definite. I had transfiguration. I smiled at Beth, "what do you have?" I asked, i really hoped we were together, it would be great if we were. I would already have a partner to sit with and Beth seemed like someone who would want to work and not get easily distracted, which i hoped meant that she would help keep me focused.

I looked down at our hands as he held mine. It was a strange feeling but then again I welcomed the feeling too. As he pulled his hand away I felt my cheeks get hot so I ducked my head so my hair fell in front of my face, just until my cheeks weren't so red.

As he was trying to remember what lesson he had I managed to look up. As he remembered I was fully composed, which was a good thing. He had transfiguration! The same as me. All I could do was smile his way.

"Well that's good, or bad depending on how you want to look at it." I smiled. He looked confused so I said. "I have the same lesson. Maybe we won't get lost. And if we do at least we won't be on our own."

I smiled when i realised that we had the same lesson, i was glad. It meant that i had someone to sit with and talk to and that i didn't have to worry about the awkwardness of finding a seat next to someone. I laughed slightly, "Yeah well...i wouldn't count on me for direction else we're bound to get lost and be half an hour late!" I said with a grin. I wanted to make Beth smile.

I looked around the hall to see other students starting to file out. Although most of the first years were still sitting down, all unsure about what they were meant to be doing now. I was among them which made me smile. I turned back to Beth "So..umm shall we go and try and find transfiguration?" I asked. Making sure Beth had finished eating first.

I smiled. "Well then at least I know that now." I saw him look around the hall at all the older years filing out. Most of use first years were just sitting watching them wondering how on earth we were going to find our way round such a huge school. Most of us weren't even close to being used to somewhere the size of this place.

I looked back to George and nodded my head. "Yeah let's try and go find this room." I smiled and stood up as he did. There was some other people on our table that had realised we had transfiguration as well so they asked to tag along.

I nodded my head and turned back to George to see him saying yes to all of them. I just really didn't want to get lost in a place like this with people I hardly knew. I knew George, but the others. I had no clue. Oh well. There was a first time for everything.

I smiled at the other first years from our table, it seemed we all had the same lesson. Looking around us i realised no one had a clue about where to go but they were all looking at us as if we knew. I just nodded to their questions about joining us. I didn't really want to. I wanted to walk around a bit with Beth on our own but i couldn't turn them all down. Still, i caught up with Beth and smiled at her.

We left the whole and immediately i was lost, why did they all want to follow me when i had no clue. I didn't know which corridor to turn down. I shot Beth a worried look and mouthed "Help!" to her in desperation. I had no idea if she knew where we going however.
